New
Directions provides children and adolescents
a more intensive and frequent mental health
treatment than is offered in traditional
outpatient settings. New Directions is the
only licensed childrens partial hospitalization
in Fayette County. The target population
is children and adolescents between the
ages 5 and 19 who are still enrolled in
school. The objectives of New Directions
are to treat underlying Mental Health conditions,
to assist the child/adolescent to cope with
problems more successfully and to help the
child/adolescent learn to demonstrate more
age appropriate, pro-social and rewarding
behaviors. The ultimate goal is for the
consumer to be able to successfully re-enter
the traditional public school settting,
be productive in their communities and well
adjusted in their families.

During
a conversation with a young man formerly
treated in the New Directions program, the
young man and his mother commented that
he is now working full time and supporting
his family. We asked his mother "where
would he be if he never attended New Directions?"
and her reply was "in jail". The
young man commented that he never realized
how much people have done for him in the
New Directions Program and how those in
the program should appreciate the dedication
of the staff..
