The newly opened Chestnut Ridge Counseling Services, Peer Support Services Program.
The goal of the peer support program is to instill hope that recovery is not only possible, but probable. Services are provided for Fayette and Greene County adults who desire support with their recovery from a mental illness. Services are provided in the home and community by trained and certified Peer Specialists who are self-identified current or former mental health service consumers.
All Services support the development of recovery skills. Individuals have the opportunity to participate in and make decisions about the activities.
The purpose of peer support is to:
- Provide opportunities for individuals to direct their own recovery
- Assist and support individual advocacy
- Teach and support skills needed for recovery;
- Provide knowledge of available service choices;
- Assist with the knowledge and use of natural resources within the community
- Assist with the development of a sense of wellness and self worth.
Peer support service includes various structured therapeutic activities which may include things such as:
Development of community roles and natural supports: Assisting the person in getting information about going back to school or job training. Learning about going back to full/part-time paid work. Assisting the person to obtain reasonable accommodations for psychiatric disability (mental health day, flex time, etc.) Assisting the person to learn to be an active community member where they live, learn, and work.
Housing: Assisting the person to learn how to get and keep stable housing or how to improve or change an inadequate housing situation.
Individual advocacy: Assist in discussing concerns about medication or diagnosis with the Physician or Nurse. Assisting with choosing necessary treatment and guiding the person to take an active role in his or her own treatment.
Self help: Assisting the person to learn to make informed, independent choices. Helping the person develop
Self improvement: Planning and assisting the person in activities that lead to increased self worth
Social network: Assisting the person with learning how to develop and maintain positive friends, family, supports. Learning how to improve or eliminate unhealthy personal relationships. Learning how to start new relationships. Learning how to improve communications with family members and others.
Crisis support: Assist the person to develop a Wellness Recovery Action Plan or a Psychiatric Advance Directive. Learning to recognize and cope with early signs of relapse to head off a crisis.
